We are so blessed

The transition from stadskind to plaasjapie has been quite the journey this year. Two weeks in the city and two weeks on the plaas, we are at the end of the 7th month of the year and so far so good.

It’s a normal Saturday morning and as a rule, I always go for a run in Blouberg because tannie Laurika Rough sê “kom ons draf lanks die strand, kom ons ry op die wind, die sand gaan jou skroei ahmmmm…” Plus it’s a stunning few. Coming back from my run I had a call from the Boer… waar is jy? Is jy oppad?

I walk into the house and there it is!
N hele moerse Blesbok in die wasbak!

Me: What is that?
Boer: N BLESBOK
Me: Why and for who?
Boer: Vir ons om te eet.

My stomach was turning (ek moes verder of stadegir gedraf het… sh@%t) and the only comeback I had to get myself out of this moerse job was… the fridge is too small, where the f@#ing hell are you going to put this? We need to go buy a new fridge NOU!! (our current fridge needs to go op pension, and not only does it serve as a fridge but it also functions as an indoor swimming pool with Titanic’s iceberg as a special feather) The insurance already wrote the fridge off and paid the money over, we as adults just can’t decide on a fridge and as the Boer is not on the versier committee this is a massive struggle.

Ok so off to Makro we go and sadly we returned home with pringle chips, Devilspeak zero beer, 2 filters for the vacuum cleaner, 2 scatter cushions (by the way, I am not even allowed to buy any more scatter cushions) olive oil, and a 113 piece Gedore toolbox /set/ thingy because the Boer is with it. And yes, we did see the fridge department, we had a look and no.

As the panic sets in we realized we needed help. We called in all favors, we invited people to the farm, we promised people braais, wine, we would even babysit (as if). Armed with a few recipes, a very old spoon-operated pressure cooker, another groot pot, and all the spices, we started cooking with no Kook en Geniet insight.

Again mense, I am not a kitchen person, we cooked on Saturday and Sunday. I spent a lot of time thinking WHY! Three distressed calls to tannie-ma and she laughed so much at me, another frantic call to my heavy (my brother-in-law) who ended up asking me if he could please bring his camp chair, a bottle of wine, and just sit and watch us. Anyway we made it, we now have  biltong, droewors, fillets, and we cooked off all the bones (nothing was wasted.) I will be making Blesbok pies soon but for now, we are done.

When you are blessed with the carcass of a Blesbok in your sink you need to be prepared for the following:
You are going to have to work for your food and yes Woolies is just around the corner but you need to put time and effort into this. You are going to smell like Blesbok, your house will smell like Blesbok. You need to know what you are doing or you are going to need someone helping you that does. If you are offered an electric pressure cooker to borrow for this cook take the f@%ing thing don’t say no. Oh and steam burns.

In conclusion, I don’t think I will be doing this soon, but we are so very blessed with this bok.

Here are the links to some amazing electric pressure cookers, I do think they are the future.
